Instruments – New Developments and Custom Designs
In co-operation with the Thein Brothers, Matthias Höfs has continuously developed the quality of existing instruments and has additionally helped to create new and innovative types of instruments. Whether it is with an orchestra, with an ensemble or as a soloist – the trumpeter has to regard a great variety of requirements. Hence, his tool should be just as versatile as it should be able to realize an interpretation that lives up to the music. During his more than twenty years of co-operation and close friendship with the Thein Brothers, a variety of special and unique instruments were built. A few even specifically designed for a single work of music. An example is the wooden trumpet for “Tristan und Isolde”. Other instruments such as the “Deutsche” B flat trumpet or the MH-One were designed as “all-rounders” and have reached a high level of perfection due to their many years of experiments and miniscule adaptions.
This perfection was achieved not only by premium workmanship but also by specific knowledge and experiences with the difficulties and special requirements of these instruments. The following pages present and describe the instruments in detail. Matthias Höfs and the Thein Brothers make comments on the respective special features and refinements of these instruments. Some of these instruments are also being demonstrated by a sound sample. Since the 4 valve instruments gain special characteristics from the 4th valve, the instruments are sorted by their number of valves.
